Today I'm on Math Coach's Corner with a tessellation tutorial.

I really appreciate Donna Boucher's passion for all things math and how she clearly geeks out on math instruction.

Donna's tutorials and posts are easy for non math-oriented people like me to understand and implement. She clearly has vast knowledge in how to get math concepts across to children and other learners.

Donna also has this great page where she lists her recommended books about math instruction. Fabulous resource for math teachers across the board.

We have a very special treat today on the blog tour -- Tessalation! is on Talking Math With Your Kids by Christopher Danielson!

Some fun facts about Christopher:
  • He has a book coming out that will change what you think about shape books.
  • He wrote an excellent e-book Talking Math With Your Kids
  • He held an event in Minneapolis for #WorldTessellationDay
  • By changing his pledge to my Kickstarter he brought me over my goal! I'll never forget that.

Christopher has been a giant supporter of this project, and we may have also ordered three sets of his tiling turtles to use at Tessalation! events:

The new TMWYK project is called The Summer of Math, and I'm delighted to announce that my book will be sent to kids around the country along with a set of the tiling turtles.

Might THIS be the cutest picture you have seen on this blog tour? Some teenagers eating tessellated cookies and reading the book?

My friend Maria Stuart of Pinot Mom put together this brilliant post incorporating tessellations and baking, as inspired by Tessalation!. Indeed, there is a mother baking a pie in the beginning of the book, but Maria decided to make some tessellated cookies. Hexagon cookie cutters are definitely a thing!

Today on the blog tour I've got a post up on Mascot Books about how to hire your own illustrator for a children's picture book.

I truly believe that anyone with a children's book idea has the tools out there to get that work out in the world. My hope with this post is that more would-be authors will be inspired to take their projects to the next level.

One of the Kickstarter backers for this project, John Vonhof, runs a great podcast called Writers and Authors on Fire.

He interviews writers about their process, tips for writing and getting their work out in the world.

For my interview, he sent a list of about 25 really great questions. It was fun to articulate some of these personal attitudes about writing in conversation with John.

I hope you check it out. It's about an hour long, but he did pull some of the highlights out if you're in a hurry.

I am lucky to be friends with Angela Guzzo and her family, who operate Waldorfbooks.com, the original online retailer for Waldorf Curriculum books and related materials.

Angela is graciously hosting the pre-order for Tessalation! and is the fifth stop on the Tessalation! blog tour.

We did a Q&A for her site about the creation of this book and writing in general. If you're planning on ordering the book, get it from Angela!

As far as I've been able to determine, Janice Novakowski was the first teacher to use my book in the classroom.

For the 4th stop of the Tessalation! blog tour, she posts about that experience, using the book as a launchpad for a discussion of tessellations and math play with shapes.

So thrilled to have a post up today on KidsMathTeacher.com. It's a rundown of how one might use Tessalation! in the classroom, with tips for different age groups and for moving from a reading of a book to a DIY tessellation project.

If you haven't checked out Lucy Ravitch's lovely blog about making math fun I encourage you to do so. She's got oodles of ideas for activities you can do in traditional classrooms or with your kids at home.

A Summer of Math -- what more could you ask for?

Lucy is also the author of The Pancake Menu, an award-winning math learning book incorporating playing restaurant and math learning.

Thank you, Lucy, for hosting my book.
